Is It Soccer or Football?
In spite of the fact that many Americans think of themselves as football fans, not a few among them are confused about the terms “soccer” and “football”. What they usually think of as “football” is the game played with an egg-shaped spheroid, while “soccer” is played with a spherical ball. Across the pond, however, they do not know what “soccer” is, calling the game, instead, “football”.
The word “football” is actually a generic term that refers to all games that involves kicking the ball into a goal or across a line to score a point. Moving the ball towards the goal may be limited to the feet, head, and torso; or may allow the use of the hands.
Among the different types and variations of football are American or gridiron football (what Americans simply call “football”), Canadian football, Australian football, Rugby football, and association football. It is this Association football that is known as “soccer” to Americans and “football” to Europeans and other peoples of the world.
Association football, or soccer, is played in a 120-yard long and 70-yard wide field. Eight-yard wide and high goals are at the ends of the field where the ball is to be delivered.
Eleven persons play on each team, playing offense and defense at the same depending on who has possession of the ball. The object is to kick the ball into the goal. They can use their torsos or heads to intercept, catch, or pass it, but never their hands. Only the goalkeepers guarding the goal of the opponent is allowed to touch the ball with their hands.
